His version of Sense on Home is marvellous and so.much better than The Lightening Seeds

Just been listening to Home, it really is a great body of work.
Whilst searching for it, I discovered that he'd done a version of Todd Rundgren's I Saw The Light, I had no idea he'd done this and what a version, lovely stuff.....

The follow up, "Laugh" is also a belter, written about the break up of his marriage, I just wish they would put the Vegas album up on Spotify now.

Great band, great lead singer unfortunately I never saw them live. Thanks for the memories whilst growing up.

RIP Terry

Re: Terry Hall. Too Much. Too Young.
The saddest of news.

A tenuous link I have is that I took a pee next to him at the Borderline just before seeing his band 'Vegas'. He was a complete legend in every sense of the word.

I would urge all of you to give his 'Home' album a listen. It got bypassed in '94 due to the Britpop explosion, but it really is one of the all time great lost Britpop albums.

RIP Terry.

Re: Terry Hall. Too Much. Too Young.
I think we are all just grateful for his tunes and message behind them. Insightful and well ahead of his time on issues like race and abuse.

Like so many the impact of child abuse via a paedo ring ultimately costs him perhaps 20 years? :-(. Abuse by a teacher leads to trauma which leads to depression and in turn drug abuse and booze to self medicate and change his moods. Even the bipolar, since the latest research saying this is also related to childhood trauma etc not necessarily a genetic or clinical condition. So Terry Hall had the odds stacked against him but it’s also what led to the creative output, lyrics that made so many of his songs resonate with us.

Highly likely IMO that the drug and booze abuse he turned to caused the pancreatic cancer longer term. So a tragic chain of events in that sense. Many many people go thru this though from what I’ve seen in my 60 odd years.

No surprise that it turns out the teacher that abused him had his own psychological problems from his own trauma and abuse as a child.

The vicious cycle of abuse, trauma that runs thru families and generations and very difficult to break that cycle. The ultimate challenge for society, social workers, teachers and law enforcement. Cause of much of the problems modern human society faces.

Other than extremes like eugenics or somehow stopping bad parents having children etc. drug and alcohol abuse will continue unabated and the NHS overload in renal and gastric wards will grow, mental health epidemic will grow.

I got sidetracked there as usual using 100 words when 1 will do. But then I am a miserable old git.

Terry Hall, taken 20 years too early but his time on this earth was truly a productive one. RIP

Re: Terry Hall. Too Much. Too Young.
I'm a fan of Ska but the Specials somehow passed me by mainly because I was working on ships in their era.
Anyhow, I lifted this from Facebook:

Horace Panter

The Specials. Terry. This is what happened.

We had it all planned out. Make the album we were going to do in 2020 – a reggae album.
Record in Los Angeles in November. We had the studio booked, flights paid for, accommodation sorted. Roger Rivas from The Agrolites was going to co-produce. Shepard Fairey was going to do the cover. Lynval, still recovering from his spinal surgery earlier in the year, was over in the UK and raring to go. Terry had the framework for 8 tunes. Confidence was high. We were set to meet up with Nikolaj and make magic. This was in September. Terry e-mails everyone and says he’s in bed with a stomach bug and can’t do the first week of pre-production sessions. No big deal, we can knock everything back a week. We’re not due to fly out until November 4th. The next week, Terry is no better and is in hospital. There’s not much we can do except wait for him to get better. Sunday October 2nd and I get a phone call from Manager Steve.
And everything turns to shit.

Terry’s illness is a lot worse than we thought.
He has been diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas which has spread to his liver.
This is serious. Like life-threatening serious.
He has developed diabetes due to his pancreas being attacked. This has to be treated first, then it’s a regime of chemotherapy.

There is nothing anyone can do. Everything is put on hold.
Terry is emphatic that no-one be told about this. If anyone asks, he’s managing his diabetes.
The chemo treatment starts favourably but it seems that it would be March 2023 at the earliest before we’d be in any position to work. He is in and out of hospital to stabilise the diabetes issue and also to manage pain.
It then goes quiet.

Beginning of December and reports are not good. Terry has lost a lot of weight and is very frail. His friend Ian Broudie visits and phones Manager Steve. He fears that Terry is slipping away.

15th December and Manager Steve drives up to London to visit. He calls me on his return journey and says things are not looking promising. Terry is dying. The next day he is put on morphine and is more-or-less unconscious for most of the time. I thought it would be best for me to go and visit but Lindy, his wife, advises against it. She has held her phone to Terry’s ear so that his sisters and Lynval can say their goodbyes. She suggests I do the same. So, I did. It was tough.

Terry died around half past 5 the next evening, Sunday 18th December.
The world has lost a unique voice and I have lost a good friend.

Horace.

It was pancreatic cancer that had spread to his liver. They were due to be recording a new album next year.
